If you think that next Wednesday October 13th is going to be another boring weekday...you totally thought wrong: it marks the Toronto screening of Air Canada's EnRoute Film Festival and you are ALL invited! The fest features Canada's top 12 short films and the best submissions will be lauded for Cinematography, Direction and a number of other categories.

Alongside millions of Air Canada passengers (who were invited to view the top 12 selected shorts during their flights,) You can venture to the Scotiabank Theatre next week and stay tuned for which of your favourites will be win during the Awards Celebration at Toronto's hotbed for artistic endeavours-- The Drake Hotel.

The Curel Journel

Dear Rosebuds, do you ever notice around this time of year that your petals are feeling a little bit dry? After the countless days of beautiful sunshine, sand and surf...I was a bit red, peeling and not feeling lovely or silky at all. Having notoriously sensitive skin (don't we all?), I came across the Curel Collection of therapeutic moisturizers and thought to put the Sensitive Skin Remedy Lotion to the test. Volia! The 7 day Curel Journel Moisturizing Regimen was born and I'm pleased to share my journey back to smooth, velvety skin in just over a week!

Day 1- Parched Princess: My skin is feeling really dry and irritable after showering and shaving my legs. I use Curel right afterwards and felt some relief. My legs felt so silky... it was a welcome change and the results were noticeable.

Day 2- Not-so-rough Rose: After showering today, my skin is still feeling hydrated from the day before and in most circumstances I wouldn't have bothered moisturizing again... but I did and it felt great:)

Day 3- The Ritual: A few weeks ago Peggy from Mad Men was toying with the ritual of pampering and how much women enjoy it. I must admit I'm really getting into it! It feels good to do something for myself that takes less than a minute and lasts all day. Plus, this moisturizer leaves my skin just as hydrated as some of the thicker creams but without the greasy feeling associated with other creams. It absorbs almost instantly and significantly cuts down my beauty prepping time.

Day 4- Dewy skin abounds! My boyfriend commented today on the texture and glow of my skin... rare news coming from a guy. Even rarer considering the state of my skin just a few days ago!

Day 5- Spot treating: Now that my body is feeling silky and soft I decide to spot treat. I have this one little dry spot on my elbow that somehow never goes away... but guess what? It's no match for Curel:)

Day 6: The Science of Skin: At this point, I'm so impressed by the results of this study (albeit a day early) I decide to read up on what makes this moisturizer different-- this dream cream is due to the use of key ingredients Ceramides and Allantoin. Ceramides are key variants in prestige skin care products and the dermatologists at Curel have incorportated these natural lipids (fats found in skin structure) to replenish, protect and act as a barrier for environmental irritants to skin.

Day 7: Rascal friendly: My bro has just come to report that he swiped some lotion for his super sensitive skin (he's had eczema since he was a baby) and was served well by this product. I'm thinking it's the Allantoin (a soothing agent) that produced relief from his seasonal itchiness and discomfort. Little known fact... skin starts to get parched and irritable as we head into fall and the atmosphere dries.

There you have it! I have just completed my 7 day moisturizing regimen and I have to say I really did love using Curel. It truly left my skin (and members of my family) feeling satiny and luxe. It packs the same punch as really thick moisturizers without the long absorption time and the best part? Fall Fashion Lessons From the Jersey Shore

I am obsessed with the Jersey Shore and therefore I am constantly having to justify this by trying to intellectualize the ‘lessons’ you can learn from this fabulous guilty pleasure. 'It teaches you about expressing your true self,' has become one of my favorite rationalizations. Do you think that Pauly D gives two shits what people have to say about his blow out? Do you think J Woww gives herself anxiety over how people interpret her need for physical confrontation? All jokes aside… while perusing Vogue.com this month I couldn’t help but make a connection to Jersey Shore because, well, that’s what I do. So here it goes: Vogue’s Fall Fashion trends as interpreted by the personal styles of Snooki, Pauly D, the Situation, Vinny, Sammi, Ronnie and yes…. even Angelina.

Snooki: Snooki comes out ready to party in Season 3 episode 3 she is rocking her now-signature pouf and a leopard dress. Vogue encourages us to show our true spots with leopard showing up on the accessories of designers from the ultimate preppy Ralph Lauren to the always adventurous Dolce and Gabbana. Don’t feel comfortable squeezing your tanned little snookies into a skin-tight leopard corset? Pair a more conservative black dress like this from Urban outfitters: http://bit.ly/dyXw Jn with some Snooki inspired leopard accessories. Balancing the bold with the soft is important for fall. If you are on the fence about leopard think of this: when Vinny sees Snooki in her leopard ensemble he tells her she took his breath away. Just sayin’

Vinny: If you met Vinny in ‘real’ life you would probably think he was the most intense Guido you had ever encountered. Only in comparison to the Situation, Ronnie and Pauly D he almost comes across as…. conservative. Nerdy, even? Well good news for Vinny: according to Vogue the nerd is in this season. Vinny is often seen with his glasses when he is hanging out around the Miami house. When I was in New York City recently there were faux glasses being sold at every corner vender in SoHo. Which is usually a good sign. I recently saw a photo of Vinny wearing a cardigan layered over a white t-shirt with a blazer to finish. Over a pair of jeans? Love it. Think I might try it when Toronto stops being so damn muggy. As Vogue says of fall knitwear it is cozy, comfortable, chic.

JWoww: Hmm. this one is tough unless you have double-F breasts that defy the laws of gravity. However, if you look at the fall beauty trends you can learn a thing or two from JWoww. Bold rich colors are popular for fall and so if you have been thinking of making a change in the hair department then why not go for deep rich colors and ditch the highlights. JWow rocks the long black hair this season and has (thank god) ditched her bleached highlights from season 1.

Pauly D: I must admit I have a soft spot for Pauly D. If he ditched the Ed Hardy, the fake tan, the blow out, the diamond accessories the... well, everything but that adorable smile. You’ve thought about it, don’t lie. In episode 3 this season he gets very excited to put on a pair of glossy red high top kicks. This season you can interpret this look by having a similar enthusiasm for bright, chunky, attention-getting boots. There is a pair of bright red Givenchy ankle boots on the Vogue website that actually made me smile when I was writing this comparison. Wear them indoors or outdoors and wear them with pride. I love this pair even though they don’t have color and they are crazy expensive but I will use them as inspiration when I look for something more reasonable. As long as you rock them with the enthusiasm of Pauly D you can’t fail.

The Situation: If you saw the photo shoot of the Situation with Bar Rafaeli a few months back then you saw the maroon loafers the situation was sporting. Oxfords and loafers will work this season. Aldo has some nice affordable versions: http://bit.ly/aUrmeK

If you have watched the show at all you know they all love Ed Hardy. I don’t. However, some graffiti inspired pants have hit the runway in the fall and have a similarly brightly colored graffiti look. Tory Burch and Diesel got it right. In terms of his most famous asset- his abs. Try a cut out dress that highlights your own best feature- if, and only if, your best feature is something tasteful like your shoulders or your back.

Sammi Sweetheart: Her behavior this season reminds me of the fall trend I am most excited for: the 1950s housewife. If you are sitting at home pining over your own version of Ronnie then at least do it in a Betty Draper inspired hour glass cocktail dress with a beautiful pattern and a skinny little belt. This way when you finally kick Ronnie out of your bed and tell him to go ‘smoosh’ someone else you will have the ultimate feminine attire for your next first date. You could get a brand new interpretation of this style or hit up a vintage Toronto store like The Paper Bag Princess to find the real thing.

Angelina: In season 1 Angelina showed up to the house with garbage bags. If you are planning to do some travel this fall do it right. Learn from Angelina’s mistake and get some grown up luggage and arrive in style. Louis Vuitton luggage never goes out of style and is an investment piece. That’s what I say about every ridiculously expensive piece I can’t afford but in this case it’s true. Alternatively you could buy some affordable luggage that matches and then check out the LV monogram canvas travel accessories to accentuate the overall look. Had Angelina arrived this way the first season maybe things would have ended differently.

Ronnie: No advice here besides, “Don’t be a douche.” It doesn’t look good on anyone.

Remember: Next time you see a juiced out Guido with a blow out sporting jewel encrusted Ed Hardy and a fake tan remember…. It’s okay. Vogue says so sort of.

Vogue Italia's Water&Oil August 2010 spread shows us that the most beautiful part of fashion is its courageousness, its honesty and its ability to deliver deep social commentary without having to say a word. Photographer Steven Meisel is a true artist... This spread has deep impact especially for those of us living in North America: It reinforces that the oil spill was an international disaster felt worldwide. Its cool that someone so far away cares and its poignant that a magazine typically aimed at women is speaking out.

Note the choice of colour, very metaphorical- the use of sfumato or layering of greys, black and plums to create the slickness and hue of oil. In keeping with its fleeting nature, both international and local media have largely turned away from this issue. Vogue positively charges on against the mainstream and is speaking out against the oil spill. Mainstream media attempts to control perception and that is an extremely powerful tool. O M G Girl Talk's concert during NXNE was extraordinary! When we heard Gregg Michael Gillis was going to be in Toronto we literally felt euphoric. We gathered our favourite collection of Rascals and made plans to spend the night with GT at the Sound Academy.

When we walked in there was this incredible moment of recognition...the crowd was roaring, the music was pumping and the vibe was positively electric. There he was... surrounded by 2000 party goers and a driving bass. He spun the classics “Once again” and “Friday night” then featured all his new songs.

Our Rascals were decked out in true music fest form including a psychedlic collection of tye-dye and flowered dresses. We ticked off the Bonnaroo style checklist... boho brainds? check. flat-but-cute shoes? check. cut off shorts? check.

Not to mention Sound Academy’s gorgeous marina patio where we chilled in the gazebos and enjoyed the cool breezes. It was the perfect escape from the hysteria inside:)

And as our Rascal John forecasts on his tee, deadmau5 is up next at the Guv. See you all there!

Small Ones Are Sweeter: The WORLD Wide Short Film Festival

We had the pleasure of attending the opening night gala of the world wide short film festival (WWSFF) last week and were privy to a screening of the top 5 films featured in the festival. Hosted by the canada film centre, the WWSFF is the largest short film festival in North America. Exhibiting 118 shorts in 6 days, the festival provides a microcosm of the international film industry. The WWSFF directors introduced us to their picks of the festival during a private screening. Here are a few of their recommendations.

Runaway- Cordell Barker’s internationally acclaimed and award winning animated short; a wonderfully weird satirical piece set on a chaotic train.Slitage- Patrick Ekland’s eccentric, yet heartwarming tale about the middle-aged couple Eva and Rolf.

Tungijuq- Cannes-winning filmmaker Zacharias Kunuk’s haunting perspective on hunting expounded through surrealism.

The Six Dollar Fifty Man- Louis Sutherland’s story of a young boy who finds solace in his superhero doll when faced with schoolyard bullying.

C’est Dimanche- Samir Guesmi’s touching tale of a young boy in crisis, facing his fears and making peace with his father.

Post screening, we were led by privately chartered ttc buses to the uber chic afterparty at c-lounge where we were instantly entranced by the lush palm trees, the cool waters of the club’s reservoir and the luxurious atmosphere. We spoke to the Belgian directors of ‘La Negotiation,’ an all male romantic comedy showing for the first time in North America. Next, we chatted with Parkdale native Shawn Wainstein-(director of Hannah George’s ‘Thick Skin” music video, as well as Halifax’s Marc Almon of Opolo film)s who is screening his film ‘D’une Rive a L’autre.

We also spoke with representatives of Raindance and several other movie production houses and got an insider’s perspective on the “searchlight” procedures of buying and discovering films that will be invested in and promoted internationally.

We will be bringing you interviews with some young and upcoming directors featured at WWSFF this week and encourage you to send us your thoughts on the festival overall.

Sex and the City 2 premiered last week and I snagged a seat to the advanced screening on Wednesday. I enjoyed the hbo show because I thought it was a witty and sometimes irreverent look at the way a group of intelligent, independent and sophisticated women tackle their role in a clandestinely traditional society. Unfortunately that has now been repackaged for the sole purpose of selling Sky vodka and Swarovski crystals to suburban housewives from Middle America . Any time Samantha trips on her Manolo Blahnik or performs fellatio on a hookah pipe I picture one of them saying, ‘Oh no she didn’t’, taking a sip from their pre-mixed cosmopolitan and then giggling for five minutes.

That being said… the clothes are still fabulous. From the red bottom of a sparkling Christian Louboutin all the way to a 20 dollar flat bought at a sketchy market stand. I love it all. The girls stick to the same formula- my personal favorite being the conservative Charlotte and my favorite outfit being the vintage Valentino ensemble her daughter destroys with red finger paint. I like that Patricia Field continues to mix accessible pieces with high end glamour and that she didn’t let a little recession get in the way of Carrie visually declaring ‘J’adore Dior’ in a middle eastern marketplace. I don’t know that it is appropriate to necessarily copy actual pieces from the girls. Don’t go take a second mortgage to purchase an orange Birkin because you saw it in the movie. Every housewife in Ohio will try to have one come September.

It is more important that you pay attention to the fashion lessons. Everyone should make their own fashion identity, you can find a magical piece anywhere from a Kensington market stall to Holts, vintage will stand the test of time and if all else fails go to your own closet and mix it up. For Carrie that meant slipping on the notorious John Galliano for Dior ‘newspaper’ dress she donned to confront Natasha… for you it could be a no-name maxi dress you bought on vacation two summers ago. As for me- I am going to go and slip in season 6 on DVD and reminisce. I just pray to god they don’t make a Sopranos movie that turns Tony Soprano into Mike ‘the situation’ Sorrentino.

RW&CO Simply Sparkles

RW&CO recently invited the Rosebuds to the grand opening of their newly and beautifully renovated Eaton Centre locale. It was quite the event as Julian Brass of www.notabletv.com hosted a "pop-up" lounge at closeby venue to welcome guests with musical stylings of DJ sisters Kissette, some vino and a luxurious lounge styled by Andrew Richard Designs. There, guests mingled and exchanged style ideas before being led (via red carpet!) next door to new RW&CO Experience.

Everyone marveled at the fresh store design- it is sophisticated, ultra modern and truly sparkles (the gorgeous chandeliers especially:) It also made us look at RW&CO in a whole new way, we have always loved the brand for its chic staples and accessible price points but their summer collection really stands out as one of high style and having incorporated edgier pieces. We would like to extend a thank you to RW&CO for inviting us to their elegant cocktail party and gala opening of the contemporary and incredible RW&CO.

This past week Rosebuds&Rascals had the pleasure of attending a lovely soiree hosted by GuessbyMarciano, Front Row Magazine and the beautiful Ainsley Kerr on behalf of Rethink Breast Cancer. Get Glam for a Good Cause was a great evening and we were able to play with Guess’ amazing Spring/Summer lines, sip on summery cocktails, nosh on delectable niblets and of course, and mingle with some of Canada’s fashion industry tastemakers.

The evening proceeded at the iconic Toronto Eaton Centre- home of the GuessbyMarciano flagship store- where much of the Canadian glitterati were in attendance to support Rethink and show off their best style. The fashionable crowd donned Summer 2010's hottest trends: maxi dresses (see Ainsley’s beautiful Guess dress above), floral accessories, fedoras and gladiator flats. Canadian style icons such as designer Ashley Rowe, Guess Marketing Manager Lindsay Lorimer, and several hot, young actors and bloggers all contributed to the chic yet, welcoming atmosphere. Guess welcomed their guests to shop at a discount on all clothing and make donations to Rethink—something everyone was very happy to do. A portion of the evening’s proceeds went to rethink’s upcoming initiatives. Rethink Breast Cancer is a charitable foundation that offers a positive platform for young women to educate themselves on the issues surrounding breast cancer.

Ainsley took a few minutes to chat with us about Rethink and also their recent “Boobie Ball” cruise in support of breast cancer research. Cohosted with Flare Magazine, we were entertained with beautiful gourmet cookies, soft house beats and the piece de resistance... shopping consultation from the ladies of Flare and 30% off anything in the store!

Flare staffer Mosha led us through some of her picks from French Connection's Spring line and taught us how to transition summer pieces into our wardrobe to fall and beyond. Among her picks were sequined dresses and tops (a well known FCUK glamour staple), nautical stripes, tailored skinny jeans, structured shoulders, slim silhouettes and the LBD "with a twist." Shown above on the lovely representative of Flare, French Connection has responded with a great dress reminiscent of the Lanvin and Valentino runways: oversized ruffles are really in.

Enter the jacflash world where life, style and milieu are white hot. Fashion house mogul Jaclyn Genovese invited the Rosebuds to her installment of Toronto Fashion Week: a sultry evening at Club Wicked featuring Augustina Bambi's pride of Bambi Doll dancers modelling jacflash burlesque creations. We started out at the jacflash store (1036 Queen West) for a few cocktails and headed next door for the show. Defying runway convention, The Bambi Dolls were stationed around Wicked dancing and donning gorgeous 60's inspired jacflash lingerie. It was a testament to Jaclyn- she's always one up on fashion, taste and vision- last night was proof positive.

Today marked the 4th annual Power of Movement National Yoga Fundraiser! POM raises funds in support of Arthritis and Autoimmunity Research Canada (AARC.) Gerri Grant (Executive Director of AARC) let the Rosebuds know that POM held 16 yoga sessions across the country and raised $300,000 today. Complete with Moksha Yoga Celeb instructors, Sponsors like Whole Foods, iTtunes, and Bullfrog and an amazing Kirtan performance from Jess Robertson... All in all it was a simply amazing event. Congratulations to Erin Moraghan and Jess McIntyre at the AARC for coordinating this engaging movement. Host Jess Robertson ended the event with a powerful thought to hold on to regarding yoga and the importance of breath "With every exhalation you end something beautiful and with every inhalation you create a new beginning." I love that:)

With Olympic fever at an all time high and the Canadian men destroying the Germans in an 8-2 game, I think it's fair to say that we live in an incredibly talented country. So let's keep our fingers crossed for the big Canada - Russia game tomorrow. At least we can rest assured that while we fight for the men's hockey gold medal, we've already won the gold in looks...I'm talking to you Ryan Getzlaf ;)

I was shopping with my friend Jenn last weekend and she told me about a fantastic design idea she had: She's plans to visit vintage record stores, pick out albums with great covers as use them as wall art in her home. She doesn't necessarily have to love or even know the music that lies inside, for now Jenn is more interested in the images used to draw people in. A visual technique that draws upon the 1950's advertising genre.
I think it's also a cool way to stumble across some new music that she otherwise might have never encountered. Here are a few of our finds from Sonic Boom (512 Bloor Street West):

My friend Emma just sent me Sarah Milroy's (of the Globe and Mail) article Beauty and the Face of Change discussing an engaging photography and multimedia exhibit entitled Posing Beauty in African-American Culture. It explores pictorial representations of identity and beauty. Posing Beauty runs until May 9/2010 and I strongly recommend a visit to the AGH to learn more about this exhibit. I'll be checking it out soon.
